You are Always Communicating. Communication is a Matter of Behavior. Communication is Hard Work.
In today’s business world, effective communication is top of the list and a highly sought-after employee and management soft skill. It has four categories, and each has distinct business behaviors and best practices.
- Verbal is face-to-face, virtual meeting, voice message, phone call.
- Listening is the ability to correctly receive and understand verbal messages during the communication process.
- Written is an email, text, social media posts, formal letters, documentation, or presentation materials.
- Non-verbal is body language that includes eyes, facial expressions, posture, hand gestures, arm movements and even our walk.
Verbal Delivery System – Words Matter
“Words are the most powerful drug used by mankind.” -Rudyard Kipling, English Writer
Communications is always two-way; the listener is just as active and involved as the speaker.
Verbal communication has to do with politeness, respect, self-control, good manners, and an open mind! Verbal messages can bring a range of challenges and communication breakdowns.
The delivery system, the speaker, is what creates communication breakdowns. When you speak, keep in mind, whom you are speaking with, what your point is, words you use, and how you say it
Listening is Critical – It is a Learned Skill
Excellent Listening has two components: Act of Listening and the Act of Receptivity
Verbal messages can be misinterpreted. When this happens, the sender of the message can become frustrated, irritated, or even angry because the message is not being received. Excellent listening skills can prevent this type of mishap at work.
Good Writing
The hallmark of skillful writing has to do with simplicity and directness
All good writing must meet four basic requirements:
- Is it accurate? Does it correctly describe the situation?
- Is it clear? Have you said what you intended to say?
- Is it coherent? Will the reader understand?
- Is it correct? Are there any misspelled words, typos, and grammatical mistakes?
Non-Verbal – The Silent Statement
Non-verbal sends out your message loud and clear. To enhance your communication skills, it is important to understand the distinct type of message you are sending.
